This time the island was rechristened Discovery Island. In 1978 Disney officials changed the name once again. One was by taking a direct motor launch from one of the resort docks or by the “Walt Disney World Cruise”, which was a tour of the Seven Seas Lagoon and included a stop to the island. Treasure Island was accessible by one of two ways. The remains of Captain Flint’s ship, the Walrus, was a wrecked hull of a sailing ship and was the most prominent and photographed feature on the island. The original pirate theme was woven into the cast members costumes as well as items such as the oil lamps and the ship wreckage. When the island opened in 1974, it acted mainly as a sanctuary for birds, reptiles, mammals and other species of wildlife. On April 8, 1974, Treasure Island, as it was now called officially opened to the public. Plants from China, the Himalayas and South Africa were transplanted to give the island a tropical lush feel. They also brought in 500 tons each of boulders and trees to create an entirely new landscape. The company brought in 55,000 cubic yards of soil to build up the islands acreage and elevations. Construction began clearing the island of any and all of its original scrub growth. When Walt Disney World opened in 1971, the island appeared on guide maps as Blackbeard’s Island. While many ideas were thrown around, it was ultimately decided to give the island a pirate motif and would draw heavily from the Disney movie Treasure Island. Riles Island as it was later called was sold in 1965 to Walt Disney as part of the secretive property acquisitions he was undertaking in preparations for his new theme park.ĭisney officials knew from the beginning that the island was prime real estate for some sort of attraction. When Nicholson became really ill, he sold it to some local businessmen to be used as a hunting retreat. Nicholson, along with his wife and pet crane lived on “Idle Bay Island” as he called it for nearly 20 years. In the late 1930’s the island was purchased by Florida’s first radio disc jockey, Delmar “Radio Nick” Nicholson for $800.00. The Raz family lived on the island and farmed the land. From 1900-1937 the island went by the name Raz Island sharing the same name with its owner. The island was owned by several different families before Disney became affiliated with it. After he purchased all the land for his new resort, he ultimately liked the island so much, he decided that the surrounding property would be the first to be developed. When Walt was flying and taking repeated arial surveys of central florida, an 11 1/2 acre island in Bay Lake was one of the main spots that caught his eye. So sit back and relax while we float on over to Discovery Island. A place a lot of people may have not even known existed or just never had that extra day on their vacation to go and experience it. In this portion of the first newsletter of 2011, we are going to take a stroll over to an often over-looked island. He never really got to see live animals incorporated into his par, but that would all change with the planning and design of the florida project, Walt Disney World. So this led to Walt’s first use of three dimensional animated animal figures. The animals would have minds of their own, sleeping during the day and more active at night and since most visitors would be visiting during the day, all they would get to see would be sleeping and inanimate animals. He was eventually dissuaded from using real animals because experts believed that the animals would be unmanageable and difficult to present to guest in the manner that Walt desired. It’s no secret that when Walt Disney was planning and creating Disneyland he eagerly wanted to include real animals into the Jungle Cruise ride experience.

However, Linux can be a little intimidating to use for the uninitiated. The main advantages of Linux are that is is free, has a small footprint, and scales better than Windows. Each option has advantages and disadvantages. FTP server software is available for both. The two most common operating systems are Windows and Linux. Once you have chosen where your server will be located, you’ll want to decide what kind of server to run. If you host the server yourself, you must have a static IP address, and obviously a good internet connection if you want high availability. You can host the server yourself (even in your own office) or rent a server that is hosted by a cloud service like Amazon Web Service, Microsoft Azure, Digital Ocean, Linode, etc. Do It Yourselfįirst, you need to provision a server. The only big downside is that your data is in the cloud - if your internet connection is down, you won’t be able to access it. You’ll have someone keeping an eye on things 24/7, and you can expand or contract as your needs require. There are considerably less up-front costs, and you can get going immediately. Second, you can purchase a hosted FTP server from a service that runs and maintains the server for you. Setting up a server is a lot of work, and if you need to expand, you are looking at buying more hardware. The big downsides are cost and flexibility. You’ll get full control of the server and its setup, including how much storage space you provision, how many users you create, and more. For a non-typical rack that has more points on one side than the other, it’s referred to as a 4-point by 5-point, never a 9-point. But in Montana, we refer to one side of the antler rack for both whitetail and mule deer. Whitetails, on the other hand, are typically counted using all the points on the antlers. A typical mule deer is four points on one side with brow tines. The most logical reason is because the abundance of mule deer, which traditionally has been counted using one side only, minus the brow tine or eye guard. One thing is certain, in Montana, you better not refer to an antler rack with four points on each side as an 8-pointer. When referring to an antler rack, hunters on the east side of the United States count all the points and hunters in the west side of the U.S. No one knows exactly where the cut-off is, but it is rumored to be somewhere in North Dakota. And people are emotionally connected with and invested in a brand’s visual expression.įor Constellation Brands, it is thankfully a different story. Bringing what makes it unique and famous to life through image, shape and colour can serve as shortcuts to convey a brand’s values or tell its story. Frequent branding shifts meant Ayds lacked the brand equity to survive in the 1980s Creating beliefĮvery famous brand usually has something distinctive that can trigger a powerful emotion – it’s the key to unlocking belief. And there was no consistent golden thread to hark back to its roots and history, to land much needed credibility and heritage – critical for all brands, but never more so than for a diet candy brand essentially selling hope. Its brand image often changed radically, so it lacked the requisite resonance and relevance for its audience. It had no long-standing equities to trigger an emotional response and gain affinity over the years. Despite it being in market since the 1930s, there was no established and familiar look and feel, and no consistent or compelling visual expression. The other problem was the Ayds brand image. The first lay in the fact that the product benefit of Ayds was rapid weight loss, which unfortunately was the public’s growing understanding of the AIDS virus victims’ symptoms. Surely a brand that had been around almost 50 years would prevail over a temporary pandemic? So, where did Ayds go wrong? Building equityįundamentally, the reasons were twofold. After all, to change your brand name because of a new virus would have felt like a knee-jerk reaction. Weight loss was an unfortunate link between the Ayds brand and the AIDS diseaseĪt that time, the Ayds marketing team also held their nerve. According to The New York Times, during the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the 1980s, sales of the diet candy Ayds dropped approximately 50% and the brand finally went out of business. It’s not the first homonym involving a disease and a brand. But in all honesty, they have good reason to be worried – Google has reported a global increase in ‘Corona beer virus’ searches. Constellation Brands, which owns the US rights to the brand, said at the end of February: “With Corona Extra sales up 5% per the latest four-week period, our beer business continues its strong performance despite unfounded claims about the impact of Covid-19 on the business and consumer sentiment.”īy countering rumours with the persuasive power of numbers, they’ve managed to shut down the gossip and carried on regardless. To date, Corona marketers have held their nerve, debunking the urban myths and defending their beleaguered brand name with substantiated stats from the get go. So, let’s get straight to the point: as a marketer, how would you play it if you were the brand manager of Corona beer? It’s not an easy situation when the brand you manage shares the same name as a global pandemic that has the world in its grip? Defending a beleaguered name And irrespective of whether the talk about consumers shunning the brand is fact or fiction, you can imagine a room of marketers at its HQ scratching their heads and thinking: “Of all the virus names you could have chosen – you chose Corona.” Reuters first reported the news of the lawsuit, which comes amid surging demand for hard seltzer in the US, on Monday.Ĭonstellation told Reuters in a statement that the company was "very surprised" by the lawsuit and called it an attempt to squash a competitor.Corona beer was always going to be an easy target. Grupo Modelo, AB InBev's Mexico-based brand, claims that Constellation violated the deal by using the Corona brand for a non-beer product, according to court documents reviewed by Insider. AB InBev retained rights to the products in other markets, and the deal gave Constellation the rights to produce Corona and other Modelo brands in the US. The beverage brand that owns Budweiser, Corona, and Stella Artois, is suing US beer-maker Constellation Brands for using the Corona brand name in a hard seltzer, according to a lawsuit filed Monday.īeverage giant Anheuser-Busch InBev (AB InBev) acquired Corona's parent company, Grupo Modelo, in 2013, but US antitrust regulators required it to sell the company's US-based business to Constellation.
